Mounting errors cause John Borg to spin in his grave

Posted on 9:27 AM by Dilip walkar
One of the attractive properties available on Hackensack's sleepy Main Street, at the corner of Bridge Street, five years after the Borg publishing family abandoned the city. The Record's retail reporter, meanwhile, is probably preparing another story on big-box stores or malls.

By VICTOR E. SASSON
EDITOR

Even the Page 1 story declaring the original owner of the Bergen Evening Record a "Bergen County Legend" contains a major error.

The Record's glib front-page headline -- "Indian chief to Mafia don" -- is part fact, part fiction (A-1).

Sure. It got me and other readers to turn the page and plow through the list selected by the county Historical Society.

But actor James Gandolfini only portrayed a "Mafia don."

The "Indian chief" is Oratam, leader of the Hackansacky Indian Tribe (A-8), but the story doesn't mention the chief's profile is prominently featured on Hackensack's official seal.

The official Hackensack seal.

John Borg

Today's story reports that John Borg, originally a stockbroker, "became the owner of the Bergen Evening Record, which 'exposed political scandal, despite kidnap and death threats,' the Historical Society said" (A-8).

Borg was the great-grandfather of Publisher Stephen A. Borg.

One has to wonder whether Stephen Borg will be remembered for cutting costs so relentlessly that he sacrificed accurate journalism.

The befuddled John Cichowski, who has written the Road Warrior column for nearly 11 years, has made more errors than the entire newsroom staff in Woodland Park, and few of them have been corrected.

Since a major downsizing ordered by Stephen Borg in 2008, Cichowski's column has rarely been edited or fact-checked -- despite Production Editor Liz Houlton, who is paid six figures to ensure just that.

Today's paper

Staff Writer Melissa Hayes has become so cozy with Governor Christie she doesn't even tell readers the age of Bridget, "his younger daughter" (A-7).

The Local staff knocked itself out getting all the details of a dramatic rescue by three state troopers who pulled a truck driver out of neck-high water in Overpeck Creek on Tuesday (L-1).

But there is not a word on how driver Lawrence Scherf, 66, crashed and burned his tractor-trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike in Ridgefield.

Was he speeding or did he fall asleep, as have so many tractor-trailer drivers recently?

I chuckled at one detail: "The troopers dropped their leather utility belts and jumped into water up to their necks" (L-3).

Utility belts? Surely, the reporter meant "gun belts."

Pardo and Rieck

The Associated Press writer who handled the obituary of announcer Don Pardo didn't think readers would be interested in how he lived to 96 (L-6).

And what moronic layout editor at The Record decided to bury Staff Writer Jay Levin's light-hearted treatment of cancer victim Jeffrey Rieck lampooning relatives in his own obituary (L-6)?

A famous Hoboken deli didn't last long in this Main Street storefront.

High rents on Main Street, low chances of success.

'No-raises recovery'

The Record's Business editors weren't about to send out reporters to interview workers on what Bloomberg News calls "the no-raises recovery" (L-7).

"Five years of economic expansion have done almost nothing to boost paychecks for typical American workers, while the rich have gotten richer."

That's certainly the case at The Record and North Jersey Media Group, owned by the wealthy Borg family.

Cory Nieves

On the Better Living front, the upbeat story about a 10-year-old CEO from Englewood leaves a couple of questions unanswered (BL-1).

If the fashion-conscious Cory Nieves has been selling hot cocoa, lemonade and cookies since 2009 to help his mom buy a car, why is she working for him and still taking the bus?

And Cory might want to rethink selling cookies, if he just looked around and saw all the kids his age struggling with obesity, a subject The Record has avoided for decades.

Local-news assignment editors miss big Hackensack story

Posted on 1:36 PM by Dilip walkar
Critics say attorney Seymour Chase is upset that an Atlantic Street Park will eliminate a reserved space where he parks his Mercedes-Benz sedan with his firm's motto on the license plate, "TAKE US TO COURT," below.

On Monday night, Chase reminded city officials that his law firm has been in Hackensack for 55 years. Was he stating his undying loyalty to the city or saying his decision to buy a building near the Bergen County Courthouse has made him wealthier than anyone can imagine?

By VICTOR E. SASSON
EDITOR

The Hackensack City Council on Monday night voted, 4-1, to adopt a bond ordinance appropriating $650,000 to build a park on a city owned parking lot downtown.

Now, the 44 parking spaces are used mostly by clients of law firms along Atlantic and Warren streets, as well as visiting attorneys and stenographers.

Attorney Seymour Chase, who owns 1 Atlantic St., called the park plan "ill-conceived," and reminded council members that many other lawyers on the two streets oppose it, raising the specter of litigation.

Other speakers denounced Chase for putting his selfish private interests ahead of the public interest as the city seeks to revive its moribund downtown with new apartments and a new park.

Those in favor of the park, including Jerry Lombardo and members of the Main Street Business Alliance he heads, noted the park plan includes 43 new parking spaces elsewhere.

"We need a central green space like the park," said an owner of Brothers Carpet at 392 Main St.

Chase & Chase is at 1 Atlantic St., at the corner of Main Street, above and below.

Where was The Record?

In May, Staff Writer Christopher Maag of The Record reported the debate over the park "comes down to an age-old fight: parks versus potholes."

At that May 6 meeting, attorney Arthur Zucker threatened to file suit against the city, comparing elimination of the parking lot (in favor of a park) to taking away the driveway of his home.

Maag's story never mentioned Zucker or Chase, who at that time claimed inadequate parking is hurting his business.

Maag was nowhere to be seen at Monday night's meeting, and today's paper doesn't carry a word about final approval of the park bond ordinance.

The park would be built on this triangular, 44-space parking lot between Atlantic and Warren streets. At left rear, a 222-unit apartment building is scheduled to be completed in May 2015. The city's planned performing arts center is at right rear.

Before the fireworks over the downtown park, Genesis Liu, left, and members of Kids' Safety Awareness Program (KSAP) asked Mayor John Labrosse and council members questions about how they do their jobs.

Today's paper

A bike path on a narrow and dangerous 9-mile stretch of Route 9W is no closer to reality, despite the photos and thousands of words in a story that takes up a quarter of the front page today (A-1).

What is the point of the story? To bring readers up to date? On what exactly?

Marty's rabbi

In 2009, The Record gave unprecedented coverage to Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, who bought an East Hill mansion next door to a Libyan-owned estate in Englewood, then complained about the planned visit of Moammar Gaddafi.

Boteach is back on the front page today, again giving a bad name to Jews (A-1).

Local news

Much of today's Local section is ripped from the police and court blotters.

McDonald's scam

A story on the first Business page today says "reporters and bloggers" ate a free McDonald's dinner "prepared by celebrity chefs using ingredients from the chain's menu" (L-8).

None of them were aware you can't polish a turd.

Cost cutting

To save money, the Borg publishing family has hired a couple of talent-less freelancers to write about food in Better Living, including Rita Cookson.

Today, Cookson tries to persuade readers they should drink certain beers with certain food, in yet another colossal waste of space (B-1).

Footnote

Even though Mike Kelly's column on Monday amounted to little more than a rewrite of all of the stories published on Robert Lintner, the burned-out reporter managed to screw up the man's first name twice on Page 1.

Lintner, you may remember, is the 65-year-old Saddle Brook man who was stabbed in the neck by his wife, leading police to find hundreds of guns and lots of ammunition in his home.

On Monday, Kelly called him "Richard," according to a correction on A-2 today.

Cliche-filled column rehashes 10-day old domestic dispute

Posted on 11:00 AM by Dilip walkar
Meridia Metro Hackensack at 94 State St. as it looked on Aug. 6. The completion date for the 222-unit building -- called the "first significant residential project ... downtown" -- has been pushed back several months to May 2015.

By VICTOR E. SASSON
EDITOR

Is there anything new in Mike Kelly's front-page column today rehashing a 10-day-old domestic violence incident in Saddle Brook?

This is vintage Kelly, The Record's appointed sage, eager to report the lessons he sees in routine police news (A-1).

"Sometimes small local disputes can touch on deep, divisive national debates," Kelly says in the third paragraph.

He must think we're morons.

Home arsenal

Police found nearly 200 guns and more than 100,000 rounds of ammunition in the home of Robert and Eileen Lintner.

OK. The old guy is off his rocker, but he certainly doesn't look like a revolutionary or terrorist or guns-right advocate, and his wife didn't use a gun; she allegedly stabbed him in the neck with a knife.

Word pushing

Once you start the fourth paragraph, the rest of Kelly's long-and-winding column is just recapping all the details of what amounts to old news.

It's just a rewrite. What's the point, Editor Martin Gottlieb? Slow news day? We get it. But a colossal waste of space.

Would you have stood for Kelly's cliche-ridden introduction at The Times?

"When they sped to a quiet neighborhood of well-trimmed lawns ...."

Page 1 is boring

What a crappy front page.

Below Kelly is a golf column from Tara Sullivan in Sports.

The first paragraph is filled with puzzling detail:

"A perilously setting sun," dueling golfers and "a battle rife with drama and thick with tension."

The A-1 story on Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale makes one passing reference to his nearly nine years as Passaic County sheriff (deep on A-6).

But there is no mention of all of the controversy he generated in that job -- reported in detail by The Record's old Passaic County Bureau.

Lynne Hurwitz of Hackensack at a May 20 meeting of the City Council. Her husband Howard is executive director of the Northwest Bergen County Utilities Authority.

Hag of Hackensack

Kelly's Page 1 column on Saturday focused on Lynne Hurwitz, chairwoman of the Democratic Party in Hackensack.

The columnist calls her "the key strategist behind the Zisa family political machine, which ruled the city for three decades until its slate of candidates was defeated last year."

In other words, she is the "Hag of Hackensack."

Now, Kelly quotes the grandmother in her mid-70s as saying she is back in the Bergen County political game.

Today and every day, editors play elaborate catch-up game

Posted on 7:35 AM by Dilip walkar
Maywood Avenue at Passaic Street, above, and State Street near Hackensack City Hall, below, were closed this week, making local driving even more difficult than normal. In Maywood and Hackensack, officers sat in air-conditioned cruisers during the work. Is that the best use of our property tax dollars?

A long trench was cut into the State Street pavement at Central Avenue.

State Street traffic backed up for more than a block as two lanes of drivers had to turn right onto a narrow, two-way street.

By VICTOR E. SASSON
EDITOR

Three days after an apparently disturbed man in a speeding pickup truck killed a woman at a farmers' market, readers of The Record find out he has a terrible driving history (A-1 and L-1).

Two days after Robin Williams' suicide, the paper's editorial director writes movingly about his father's struggle with depression and mental illness, but the column is buried in favor of a feel-good story about the comedian "rallying the troops" (A-1).

Courts rely on retirees

This bold Page 1 headline today sounds like news concerning a shortage of judges in Bergen County.

But the reporter comes clean in the second paragraph, noting the courts have used retired judges for 40 years (A-1).

Revel's luck runs out

The $2.4 billion Revel casino hotel was doomed to fail when it opened in April 2012 backed by Governor Christie's $200 million state tax-break package (A-1).

Contrary to today's Page 1 headline, Revel never was lucky, especially in view of $400-a-night rooms and the smallest casino in Atlantic City -- two features that turned off vacationers.

Yet, The Record's John Brennan has ignored them in story after story about its failed history.

More screw-ups

And a moronic news or copy editor actually wrote an awkwardly worded photo caption saying "Revel employees won't be celebrating" when the casino closes and they lose their jobs (A-8).

Who would "celebrate" losing their jobs in New Jersey or anywhere else? What insensitive idiocy.

Production Editor Liz Houlton gets paid six figures to catch such embarrassing work, and to limit embarrassing corrections, such as the one on A-2 today.

Publisher Stephen A. Borg might as well throw the money out of the window.

Razor burn

The lead anecdote in last Sunday's Page 1 takeout on Richard Nixon's life in Bergen County after he resigned the presidency is about a barber who cut his hair every two weeks, Domenic Parisi.

But Staff Writer Christopher Maag wrote in his first paragraph the shop was on "Maple Avenue in Park Ridge."

Below that, a small A-1 photo of the barber and a quote also identified Parisi as "Nixon's former Park Ridge barber."

Today's correction notes the A-1 article "misidentified the town" of the barbershop, but the street also was wrong.

Parisi's shop is on "North Maple Avenue in Ho-H0-Kus," the correction states, not Maple Avenue in Park Ridge (A-2).

Playing catch-up

I'm not sure what is going on at the morning and afternoon news meetings in the Woodland Park newsroom -- led by the august Martin Gottlieb, a big-time former editor at The New York Times.

But day after day, the print edition plays catch-up on so many stories that are full of unanswered questions thanks to the laziness or incompetence of local Assignment Editors Deirde Sykes and Dan Sforza.

The first question reporters should have asked about James T. Woetzel, 48, the man who killed Donna Marie Wine at the Hawthorne farmers' market on Sunday, is does he have a good driving record.

But the initial report on Monday didn't even identify the driver or the dead woman. (!!!!)

Today's L-1 story says Woetzel "has a long record" of violations, including DWI, speeding and careless driving.

Come to think of it, the single story about the death of pedestrian Leyla Kan, 60, last Thursday in Leona didn't say anything about the driving history of Esperanza Jaramillo, 54, the school-bus driver, nor did reporters seek comment from her employer, Rainbow Transportation of Bergenfield.

Promoting Ervolino

The editors of Tuesday's Better Living cover couldn't wait to exploit the death of comic Robin Williams by promoting Staff Writer Bill Ervolino's 1989 interview with the comic genius.

But today, concern about mental illness and the depression that drove Williams to suicide is all over the paper -- in a letter to the editor, in a column by Editorial Page Editor Alfred P. Doblin and in a story on the same Better Living front (BL-1).

A letter on A-10 today from Robert L. Parker, chief executive officer of NewBridge Services Inc., seemed to speak for many of Williams' most ardent fans:

"We mourn the loss of such a brilliant performer and scratch our heads at how someone who seemed to have it all would end his life.

"Let's try to make something good come of Williams' death. Let's make it a rallying point to value mental health care at the same level of importance as physical health care."

The Record could help by writing about community organizations like NewBridge, instead of seizing every chance it get to promote itself and its staff.

Hysteria over North Jersey's 'exploding' trains grips editors

Posted on 8:42 AM by Dilip walkar
Amid a lavish display of flowers, photos of a beaming Leyla Kan, 60, the woman killed by a school bus in Leonia last week, appeared in the window of her pizza-and-pita restaurant in Palisades Park on Monday, above and below. Picnic Cafe, which was closed on Monday, is one of the few non-Korean businesses on Broad Avenue.

The bouquets turned the sidewalk fragrant. Some of the Korean-Americans who stopped to look at the memorial didn't know how Kan had died. The Record did one story on the fatal accident, which resulted in traffic summonses being issued to the school-bus driver, but no follow-ups to resolve unanswered questions.

By VICTOR E. SASSON
EDITOR

Should I worry or is today's Page 1 account of exploding oil trains passing through neighboring Teaneck just a sensational attempt to sell The Record during a sleepy August?

As a resident of Hackensack, I'm trying to figure out whether I'm far enough away to be safe after derailment of  "aging" rail tanker cars that carry "millions" of gallons of "highly explosive crude oil" through North Jersey (A-1).

This appears to be a major piece of investigative journalism guided by Editor Martin Gottlieb.

Full story -- finally

The front of Local today fills in many of the details missing in Monday's hastily prepared story about a woman struck and dragged to her death at the Hawthorne farmers' market by a speeding pickup truck (L-1).

The victim, beautician Donna Marie Wine, 58, of Hawthorne lived near the suspect, James T. Woetzel, 48, the driver who was charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident on Sunday, but they didn't know each other, The Record says.

"Neither police not the county Prosecutor's Office would reveal details of the horrific incident," forcing Staff Writers Minjae Park, Andrew Wyrich and Jim Norman to wait for the next press release.

However, the reporters are sticking with the victim being dragged four blocks, even though other media accounts put the distance at a half-mile.

Robin Williams

Burned-out columnist Bill Ervolino again uses the death of a prominent entertainer to promote his own sorry ass (BL-1).

Why does this "appreciation" of Williams begin like others he's written, recapping an Ervolino interview from the dark ages, in this case 25 years ago?

You can read thousands of words about the comic genius on Page 1, the Better Living front and BL-2, and still not know how Williams died.

More questions

The cause of death was "suicide due to asphyxia" or suffocation, but does that mean Williams hung himself, put his head into the oven, was trying a weird sexual thing or killed himself in another way?

Unfortunately, you can't count on The Record for the answer, whether a death occurs as near as Leonia and Hawthorne or as far away as northern California.

Leyla Kan

In front of Picnic Cafe in Palisades Park on Monday, a woman recalled her 20-year friendship with the owner, Leyla Kan, who was killed last Thursday morning by a school bus in Leonia.

Years ago, Kan had been severely injured in an automobile accident, and was so grateful to have survived, the friend said.

Now, the woman said, she can't believe her friend is gone. All she was doing was crossing the street.

More corrections

A correction today notes The Record can't even spell a former freeholder's name properly (A-2).

In his Sunday column, Road Warrior John Cichowski mistakenly said there are only six residential streets with direct access to Route 17 south, even though he reported previously there are seven.

Cichowski's sense of direction also is flawed in that he said a Bergen Avenue house is five blocks south of another resident, when it is, in fact, five blocks north.

Read about other flaws in the column:

Skeleton newsroom fumbles another fatal accident story

Posted on 8:40 AM by Dilip walkar
Marks left by investigators after Leyla Kan, 60, of Fort Lee was struck, dragged and killed by a school bus Thursday morning on Broad Avenue in Leonia.

By VICTOR E. SASSON
EDITOR

Three days after a Page 1 story left many questions unanswered about the death of a pedestrian hit by a school bus in Leonia, The Record today publishes another woefully incomplete front-page report on a pickup truck that "plowed through a farmers' market" in Hawthorne, killing a woman.

So much is missing from this story, assembled by a skeleton Sunday newsroom staff and the local assignment editor who got stuck working that day.

No names, ages

Readers don't even find the name and age of the dead woman, said to be a Hawthorne resident, or the name and age of the driver, who was being evaluated at a hospital "because he was visibly upset," the police chief said.

There also is no attempt to explain why the driver of the pickup dragged the woman at least four blocks before stopping.

The accident happened at 2:15 p.m. Sunday -- about 15 minutes after the market's official closing time.

No Web update

At 11:12 this morning, the report on the paper's Web site, NorthJersey.com, also was missing the names of the victim and driver. The story was last updated at 11:13 Sunday night.

When do Deirdre Sykes and Dan Sforza, the laziest assignment editors in journalism, get into work in Woodland Park today -- at noon or later?

NorthJersey.com does carry a video of a TV report at 5:04 this morning, but Channel 7 Eyewitness News says the woman was pinned underneath the pickup truck for a half-mile -- not the four blocks described in The Record story -- and the driver made two left turns.

Also in the video, a woman at the market describes the truck as "speeding."

Young reporters

Today's Page 1 story was based on reporting by two males in their early 20s, Staff Writers Andrew Wyrich and Minjae Park, both of whom appear not to have any police sources.

Hawthorne Police Chief Richard McAuliffe is quoted as saying of the driver who killed the woman, "As of right now, he has not been charged."

But most of the quotes in the story come from Hawthorne Mayor Richard S. Goldberg, not the chief, who apparently refused to release information to the inexperienced reporters.

In an understatement, Goldberg said the accident is "something this town will not forget for a long time," but why is this quote on Page 1?

Highlands Act

I'm not sure why the 10th anniversary of the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act doesn't appear on the front page today, especially in view of all the holes in the fatal accident story, which would have worked better on the Local front.

The act was signed into law by Gov. James E. McGreevey, though he is better known for declaring that he is gay and resigning, also 10 years ago.

In fact, McGreevey signed the act into law on Aug. 10, 2004, a few days before he resigned.

If you read far enough, you'll learn that Governor Christie continues to be an enemy of New Jersey's environment (L-6).

Christie eliminated payments in lieu of taxes to compensate towns that lose ratables because they have protected land, said Jeff Tittel, New Jersey Sierra Club director.

Jersey water

"Even with his attacks ... and his weakening of environmental protections, the law is still on the books," Tittel said. "The law is getting enforced as best it can even with this governor."

Referring to the reservoirs and watersheds the act is meant to protect, Tittel said:

"Water in New Jersey feeds our three largest industries -- food processing, pharmaceutical and tourism."

Highlands water goes into making Budweiser beer, Manischewitz matzo, Goya Foods and Tylenol, among other products.

Investigators left their mark where pedestrian was killed

Posted on 6:29 AM by Dilip walkar
This is the Leonia intersection and crosswalk where Leyla Kan, 60, of Fort Lee was struck by a school bus on Thursday morning, then dragged and killed. The dark, curving mark visible on the Broad Avenue pavement on Saturday was left by the vehicle's tire as Kan was dragged about 71 feet.

The yellow box marked by investigators on the Broad Avenue crosswalk is said to be where Kan was when she was hit by the school bus, which was turning left from Fort Lee Road toward Englewood. The driver didn't yield to her, police said. The Record's one story on the fatal accident didn't say whether Kan was in the crosswalk.

These markings at the end of the heavy tire skid mark may indicate where Kan's body came to rest.

By VICTOR E. SASSON
EDITOR

The door to Picnic Cafe, the pizza-and-pita restaurant owned by Leyla Kan, was open on Saturday and I could hear people seated inside fondly remembering the woman who was killed by a school bus as she crossed the street in Leonia on Thursday morning.

A notice on the window of the Palisades Park cafe said the family of the 60-year-old Fort Lee woman will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at McCorry Bros. Funeral Home in Cliffside Park.

Picnic Cafe is on the same street, Broad Avenue, where Kan was killed.

Despite all the unanswered questions surrounding Kan's untimely death, The Record hasn't done a follow-up nor have the editors seen fit to call for a change in the law that would hold drivers criminally responsible for pedestrian deaths.

Only summonses

Esperanza Jaramillo, 54, the bus driver, received summonses for careless driving, failure to yield to a pedestrian who had the right of way and driving a vehicle with badly worn tires.

The poorly reported and edited story on Thursday noted Kan "was struck by the protruding passenger compartment of the minibus behind the door, apparently unseen by Jaramillo."

"Apparently unseen" was the best The Record could do to explain how the turning driver could hit a pedestrian in the crosswalk on Broad Avenue in Leonia, drag the victim 71 feet and not realize it.

Today's paper

The Record's Sunday edition today is one of the thinnest and most disappointing in recent memory.

The main element on Page 1 is a silly report by Staff Writer Christopher Maag on Richard "I Am Not a Crook" Nixon's life in North Jersey after he resigned the presidency in disgrace 40 years ago Saturday (A-1).

In another front-page story, The Record is finally getting around to discussing the impact of a shortage of judges on people involved in divorces and other cases in Bergen County (A-1).

I guess from the Woodland Park newsroom, Assignment Editors Deirdre Sykes and Dan Sforza can't see all of the crime victims waiting for justice in Hackensack.

Road litter

On the Local front, the Road Warrior column continues to harp on the unprotected homes along Route 17 south where a Waldwick police radar officer was killed by a tractor-trailer on July 17 (L-1).

For his last Road Warrior column, Staff Writer John Cichowski made a rare trip to the antiquated Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan -- where North Jersey commuters face long delays in getting home -- and looked for the most irrelevant story he could find among the gridlocked buses.

In the process, Cichowski put his foot in his mouth once again, according to the Facebook page for Road Warrior Bloopers:

"In his Thursday column, the Road Warrior takes on the simplest of tasks and messes it up with his inept reporting about the statue of Ralph Kramden, the Jackie Gleason bus driver from 'The Honeymooners' TV series, in front of the Port Authority Bus Terminal, and related mass transit issues.
"Road Warrior reports about the virtue of a bus driver calling riders on his cellphone to alert them that their bus was running late, and likened the virtue of this bus driver to Ralph Kramden.
"However, this virtue is contradicted by the facts, which the Road Warrior has frequently addressed in his columns, that the bus driver’s use of a cellphone, hand-held or hands free, greatly increases the risk of an accident and would endanger passengers. It also potentially violates New Jersey cellphone law if the driver is using a hand-held cellphone.
"As Ralph Kramden would frequently exclaim when faced with implausible distortions and sadly worthless statements: 'Har! Har! Hardy! Har! Har!'"

Cichowski also got the bus terminal's age wrong -- again -- and mistakenly reported that $800 million had been proposed to "refurbish" the building when, in fact, the money had been earmarked for a new bus parking garage in the city.

For a full report on the confused Cichowski's continuing ineptitude, see:

Where am I and how do I get home?

Vegetable high

Readers are staring in disbelief at an Elisa Ung column on the Better Living front about a Sussex County farm, glorious vegetables and the Bergen County chefs who praise and use them in their kitchens (BL-1).

In her many years of food writing for The Record, Ung has shunned salads and become known as the queen of meat and desserts -- and just about any other artery clogging food.
