Page 1 news: In winter, It's really cold in the Dakotas

Posted on 1:30 PM by Dilip walkar
In Hackensack this afternoon, there were few signs of what The Record predicted four days ago would be a "double-headed monster of a storm."

By VICTOR E. SASSON
Editor

If the winter weather in North Jersey doesn't live up to The Record's dire predictions, Editor Marty Gottlieb always has a backup plan -- as Page 1 clearly shows.

How else to explain today's wire-service weather report from the Dakotas, Michigan and Missouri, and photos from St. Louis and Bismarck, S.D. (A-1 and A-6)?

Where are the North Jersey weather photos? Shouldn't the one on L-1 today be on the front page?

And why is the North Jersey weather story and a second local photo buried on L-6?

After all, Marty Gottlieb, you gave up Paris for Woodland Park and became editor of a local North Jersey daily. You're not at The New York Times anymore.

Borg monster?

On Thursday morning, hours before a 7-inch snowstorm hit North Jersey, a story in The Record predicted "near-blizzard conditions" and a "double-headed monster of a storm."

Nothing of the kind materialized, prompting readers to wonder if "double-headed monster" was, in fact, a subliminal reference to the spoiled Silver Spoon sibs running The Record of Woodland Park, Stephen A. and Jennifer A. Borg.

Head up asshole

On the Local front today, Paramus Mayor Richard LaBarbiera praised the borough Police Department for responding "professionally" to a gunman who invaded Westfield Garden State Plaza on Nov. 4 (L-1 and L-3).

What's professional about not responding in time to prevent panic among shoppers and employees, failing to disarm Richard Shoop of Teaneck and failing to prevent his suicide?

And what about the irresponsible lack of security provided by the wealthy Australian owners of the state's biggest mall?

Second look

On Sunday, an L-1 story on Fu King Smoke Shop is likely the first about Hackensack's Fairmount section in decades.

Staff Writer Hannan Adely describes Fairmount as "quiet," but residents there and in most other parts of Hackensack are annoyed around the clock by incredibly loud jet aircraft using Teterboro and Newark airports.

The smoke shop is on a part of Main Street that gets even less attention from The Record than the city's main shopping district between the courthouse and Sears.

Here's another black mark against Garden State Plaza

Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus -- often called the state's biggest mall -- appears well on its way to becoming the baddest.

The only story worth reading on Page 1 of The Record today is the heart-tugging account of how a Macy's escalator mangled the foot of an 11-year-old girl, and how a surgeon stepped in to prevent its amputation (A-1).

Westfield in the mall's name is for the Westfield Group, the Australian owner of Garden State Plaza and 90 other shopping centers in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Garden State Plaza receives lavish news coverage in The Record -- payback for all of those full-page ads from Macy's and other mall retailers that are keeping the Woodland Park daily afloat.

Recently, a story in Business heralded the construction of a wing of luxury stores at the Paramus mall -- just what we need as North Jersey continues to struggle with high unemployment and low job creation.

Lawsuits filed

The Aug. 16 accident that nearly killed Juliana Valdez of Bergenfield has sparked two lawsuits, including the family's federal action against Macy's and the company that maintained the escalator, ThyssenKrupp (A-10).

A second black mark against the mall -- and its apparent lack of security -- is the Nov. 4 invasion by gunman Richard Shoop, who committed suicide there, triggering panic among shoppers and a massive police response that proved completely ineffective.

For a change, The Record's copy desk did a nice job on the injured girl's story, especially the set of bright headlines.

However, Production Editor Liz Houlton missed a major discrepancy:

The story reports the girl is "getting around on crutches and a walker," but the big A-1 photo just above that shows her in a wheelchair, which isn't mentioned anywhere.

Wrong number

The 10th anniversary issue of (201) magazine landed with a thud on my doorstep.

As usual, the December 2013 issue is a celebration of the wealth and success of Bergen County's white residents.

OK. A few token blacks and other minorities appear in what Publisher Stephen A. Borg calls the pride and joy of all of his North Jersey Media Group publications.

In the current issue, a profile of Englewood stylist Rachel Johnson is the story of how an African-American woman succeeds by exploiting wealthy black athletes who don't have a clue about how to dress (Pages 76-77).

Columnist re-used anecdotes, quotes from a year ago

Work continues on the NJ Transit train station on Anderson Street in Hackensack, above and below. When completed, the station will have the first waiting room for city commuters in many years.

A seemingly innocent Record column with advice about getting a Black Friday parking space at the mall hid a multitude of journalistic sins.

Chief among them is that Staff Writer John Cichowski lifted the people, quotes and advice in Friday's L-1 column from a year-old Road Warrior piece on the same subject.

Hello again, Amy

The veteran reporter took several short cuts to avoid actually leaving the office and interviewing shoppers for their experiences and advice.

On Friday, he reported the experience of  "Amy Strauss and her cousin," whose car was blocked by two drivers competing for her space -- just as he did in his 2012 column.

Even the quote from Strauss was lifted word-for-word from the year-old column.

On Friday's continuation page, he cited a study on which car colors are most attractive to thieves -- in the Netherlands, not mall-rich Paramus.

All of the flaws in Friday's column are revealed on the Facebook page for Road Warrior Bloopers in The Record.

Stale Road Warrior column given new life

A concerned reader's e-mail listing the errors, distortions and other problems has been sent to everyone from Vice President/General Counsel Jennifer A. Borg to Editor Marty Gottlieb to Cichowksi's assignment editor to the addled reporter himself.

Another recipient of the e-mail is Production Editor Liz Houlton, the six-figure copy and news desk supervisor whose job it is to fact-check Cichowski's columns.

Today's paper

The only items on today's front page of any real interest to readers is a brief reporting truckers hit with big toll hikes on the GWB and other crossings "may no longer be willing to take runs through the New York metro area" (A-1 and L-1).

I can't wait. Good riddance to all those lead-footed truckers who seem intent on rolling over your car, if you dare drive only 5 mph or 10 mph over the limit on Route 80 and other highways.

Other stories on Page 1 -- on the Affordable Health Care Web site, the decades-old protest by religious crackpots at an Englewood abortion clinic, and Governor Christie's laughable tax-cut plan -- are the kind of manufactured controversies the media specializes in.

Check out the correction of Thursday's A-1 screw-up the editors missed (A-2). LOL.

More bad journalism

Cichowski is back on the Local front today with his second column on road projects, which somehow escaped his attention until last week (L-1).

In contrast to the millions of words The Record's editors commission on shopping malls and big retailers, a story on Small Business Saturday was written by a single reporter interviewing shoppers in one downtown, Englewood (L-3).

Sorry, Charlie, the wealthy Borg publishing family tells downtown merchants in Hackensack, Teaneck and other towns, if you don't advertise with us, you can go to hell when it comes time for news coverage.

Another Kelly turd

What would Sunday be without another column from the desperate Mike Kelly?

Today's Opinion front piece is Kelly's third attempt to link poor Richard Shoop of Teaneck to the mass shooting that killed 20 children and six adults in Newtown, Conn. (O-1).

Shoop, you'll recall, is the 20-year-old pizzeria worker who took advantage of the pathetic lack of security at Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus on Nov. 4, and committed suicide.

Before he shot himself in the head, he fired randomly, but wasn't aiming at shoppers.

Don't make Kelly's column the last thing you read in today's Sunday edition.

If you do, you won't be able to get the column photo and Kelly's shit-eating grin out of your mind.

Lack of mall security gives Paramus nightmares

Posted on 11:29 AM by Dilip walkar
A new CVS on the ground floor of a luxury apartment building in downtown Englewood, above, replaced two failed food markets. The drugstore and a soon-to-open bagel store, below, are among signs of renewal along Palisade Avenue, but many shuttered storefronts remain. On Saturday night, New Orleans rhythm-and-blues singer Aaron Neville performed at bergenPAC on North Van Brunt Street. The hall looked only half full.

The Record of Woodland Park has largely ignored the struggles of main streets in Englewood, Teaneck, Hackensack and other communities in favor of lavishly promotional coverage of new retailers at North Jersey malls.

When an armed man or men invade a mall, school or movie theater -- setting off panic -- what good are drills and a massive police response after shots are fired?

That's the question The Record should be asking Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg and the Australian owners of Garden State Plaza, the state's biggest shopping center.

Instead, Editor Marty Gottlieb leads today's front page with Ehrenberg's elaborate justification for why police were relegated to performing mall clean-up duties the night of Nov. 4 and early Nov. 5.

That's when Richard Shoop, 20, of Teaneck fired six random shots before fatally shooting himself in the head.

'Shooting' or suicide?

The Record continues to use the words "shooting" and "shooter," even though Shoop fired into the ceiling, an elevator door and a sign or signs, and hurt no one but himself.

A photo caption on Page 1 today uses a weird verb to describe a police assault team outside the mall:

"Police aligning at Westfield Garden State Plaza on Nov. 4" [italics added].

What is that copy editor smoking?

The Paramus police chief calls Shoop's invasion a "nightmare scenario come true."

But the potential nightmare remains for shoppers, because Garden State Plaza has numerous entrances and not a single metal detector or any other security measure I am aware of with the exception of cameras.

Biased reporting

Also on Page 1 today, a column on the big campaign war chest that radical Republican Rep. Scott Garrett of Wantage will use in the next election only serves to remind readers of how little coverage The Record gave to his last Democratic challenger (A-1).

Redistricting shoved the Tea Party crackpot down the throats of Bergen County residents, including 80 percent of Teaneck and all of Bergenfield, Fair Lawn, Hackensack and Paramus.

The only Hackensack news in Local today is the arrest of an illegal immigrant on charges of stabbing another man (L-3).

A shuttered restaurant on Englewood's Palisade Avenue. The storefront where Victoria's Secret operated for many years also remains vacant.

Choking response

In Better Living, Food Editor Esther Davidowitz invites readers to choke on the wordy first paragraph of her Ridgewood bartender profile (BL-1).

The story is the latest in an occasional series called BEHIND THE KITCHEN DOOR.

Too bad that door didn't open to reveal someone who could edit her long-winded prose.

Page 1 story hides elaborate Hackensack correction

A Page 1 story in The Record today exposes more payouts for unused time in Hackensack, but also hides an elaborate correction of Friday's front-page story on similar payments to the corrupt Ken Zisa, onetime police chief and state assemblyman.

And the dominant story on today's front page -- video frames of the man who committed suicide at Garden State Plaza in Paramus -- again ignores the irresponsible lack of security at the state's biggest shopping center.

Cashing in

The Hackensack story reports more than 30 employees rushed to retire and cash out unused sick and vacation time as Governor Christie "tried to cap sick-leave pay for retiring public workers" (A-1).

But on the continuation page, Staff Writer Hannan Adely takes back Friday's front-page story, which claimed Zisa was paid twice in 2010 for unused time (A-6).

Now, Adely reports Zisa received $94,513 for unused sick days or $53,671 after taxes. On Friday, they were reported as separate payments.

Today's story contains new errors:

That Zisa received the payment "just before his arrest on charges of insurance fraud," when Adely previously reported it was after his arrest at the end of April 2010; and that he is appealing his conviction on official misconduct charges, when he is appealing two convictions, one for official misconduct and another for fraud, as well as a 5-year prison sentence.

$2.4 million deal

The lawsuits against Zisa reported in today's story -- and the millions of dollars paid to settle them -- prompt long-suffering residents and taxpayers to wonder why the City Council didn't move to fire him years before his arrest.

On A-6, Adely reports the former girlfriend of then-Deputy Police Chief Frank Zisa Jr., the chief's brother, won a $2.4 million settlement from a lawsuit alleging Ken Zisa retaliated against her because she refused sexual advances by him and Frank Zisa Jr.

More A-1 errors

Also on Page 1 today, video frames of Richard Shoop, 20, an armed Teaneck man who entered Garden State Plaza on Nov. 4 to commit suicide, drive home the pathetic lack of security provided by the mall's Australian owners and Paramus police.

The Record has ignored that story, and today (Nov. 16) describes the events of Nov. 4 as "last week."

Though that is technically correct, it is confusing and a more precise phrase, such as "12 days ago" would have been better.

The Woodland Park daily quotes police as saying Shoop "did not appear to be intent on killing anyone but himself and avoided confronting" officers, who arrived minutes after he fired random shots into an elevator door, the ceiling and signs.

Still, burned-out Staff Writer Mike Kelly distorted the incident in three columns, comparing Shoop to the gunmen at Columbine High School and in Newtown, Conn.

If police weren't summoned until shots were fired, does that mean no one was monitoring security cameras or that a man in black wearing a helmet and carrying a rifle didn't alarm guards who were?

Today's story and photo caption variously describes the part of the mall where Shoop's body was found as "a back hallway," "an area of catacomb-like hallways" and the "basement."

Where is Houlton?

The confusing time element and fuzzy reporting in today's story again dramatizes the incompetence of Production Editor Liz Houlton, who is paid a six-figure salary to supervise news editors, copy editors, copy desk supervisors and page proofers.

Their job is to act as a last line of defense against factual and grammatical errors in stories that are missed by the local assignment desk, notably Deputy Assignment Editor Dan Sforza, who is running this farce in the unexplained absence of lifer Deirdre Sykes.

They seem incapable of catching even the most obvious errors, as today's Page 1 screw-ups and two more corrections on A-2 demonstrate.

Another story that exposes copy desk incompetence appears on L-5 today, where the headline suggests that only one taxicab operates in Paterson.

Should Hackensack official return $93,000 to city?

Posted on 11:50 AM by Dilip walkar
Rush-hour traffic on the upper deck of the George Washington Bridge this morning. The Record continues to report on unannounced "temporary lane closures" in September that affected drivers entering tollbooths from Fort Lee (A-1), but its transportation reporters ignore the daily nightmare of commuting by car or overburdened mass transit.

By Victor E. Sasson
Editor

I'm sure I'm not the only Hackensack resident who hadn't heard of Agatha Toomey until last week, when the director of the city's Human Services Department made headlines for denying benefits to a formerly homeless man who was awarded $850 he found on the street.

On Wednesday, Record Staff Writer Hannan Adely reported Toomey is being paid $133,000 a year and has use of a city car  -- the kind of largesse residents have come to associate with Zisa family rule.

In a front-page story today, Adely reports Toomey received "a windfall of $93,000 in a payout for unused benefit time" in February 2011.

And, Adely reports, convicted former Police Chief Ken Zisa, who also served in the state Assembly, received a similar payout of $94,513 "just days before his arrest on fraud charges."

City Manager Stephen Lo Iacono said he didn't know why Zisa's name was on the list of employees who retired or were about to retire.

And Mayor John Labrosse claims Zisa's name was not on the list of retirees he was given (A-6). At the time, Labrosse was a member of a City Council dominated by Zisa allies, who were thrown out of office on July 1.

There has been no explanation for why Toomey makes so much money or why she still drives a city car weeks after officials pledged to review such use.

Should she return the $93,000? That question hasn't been addressed by city officials.

More sloppy work

As if The Record hasn't repeatedly smeared Richard Shoop's name, an A-6 caption on Tuesday "misidentified" his mother, Barbara, according to one of the two corrections on A-2 today.

Shoop is the troubled 20-year-old Teaneck pizzeria employee who went to the Garden State Plaza mall in Paramus on Nov. 4 to commit suicide, firing random shots into the ceiling before killing himself in the basement.

Three columns by burned-out Staff Writer Mike Kelly associated Shoop with mass murderers.

Furious back pedaling

What are readers to make of an editorial urging an end to all  "the talk" about the 2016 presidential election and whether Governor Christie will be the Republican nominee (A-20)?

It's Editor Marty Gottlieb and his gang of political columnists and reporters who have been feeding that media frenzy for more than a year.

Sensational stories

Also on A-1 today, Debra J. Feldman, 48, a Hackensack woman who disappeared in 2009, may have been the victim of a serial killer, the FBI said.

This sensational story is one of the many Law & Order stories in the paper today, especially in Local, which still had to use three filler photos of minor fires to fill its pages (L-2, L-3 and L-6).

Gee-whiz. A truck caught fire in Secaucus, and a car caught fire in Fair Lawn. And in other fire news, a short-circuit "destroyed" the facade of a Ridgewood building.

You can always count on Deputy Assignment Flunky Dan Sforza to be first with such major breaking news.

Pedal error?

More troubling is The Record's inability to report whether the driver of a car that hit a Trader Joe's employee in Westwood was elderly and mistook the accelerator for the brake pedal, a common problem for older drivers (L-1).

The story says the driver was "a woman who appeared to be elderly," and describes her Toyota Camry, one of the most recognizable cars on the road, as "a beige-colored sedan."

Second look

The Road Warrior column on Monday was filled with errors, according to the concerned reader who maintains the Facebook page for Road Warrior Bloopers:

All of the Motor Vehicle Commission issues Staff Writer John Cichowski mishandles "are clearly explained on various MVC website links or can be correctly answered by calling MVC customer service."

Cichowski also reported incorrectly the initial "inspection" of a new car is good for 5 years in New Jersey when no such inspection is required.

See the full e-mail to management and the editors:

Road Warrior skips correct MVC answers

Will a Christie White House bid be good for N.J.?

Posted on 8:39 AM by Dilip walkar
Hackensack officials have made no improvements to pedestrian safety on Prospect Avenue, which is lined with high-rises, since Jerome S. Some, 87, was struck and killed by a car as he crossed the street on Oct. 8 to attend a meeting at Bel Posto Restaurant, above. They haven't painted missing or faded crosswalk lines or added signs advising drivers of a state law requiring them to yield to pedestrians.

By Victor E. Sasson
Editor

Readers were spared for only one day from the primping and preening of Governor Christie for a White House run in 2016 that dominates the front page of The Record today.

In the hundreds of thousands of flattering words that have been written in the past year, The Record's editors haven't tackled the angle that means the most to readers:

Will Christie's frequent absences from the state as he courts out-of-state conservatives, right wingers and Tea Party crackpots and their deep pockets be good or bad for the Garden State?

As we already know from a Page 1 story a few days ago, a Christie presidency -- as far-fetched as that sounds -- would elevate Lt. Gov. Kim Guadano, a non-entity who is the GOP bully's lap dog, to the Governor's Office.

Caused landslide

Today's front page also perpetuates the myth that Christie won a second term last week by a "landslide," even though he was chosen by a small minority of registered voters (A-1).

The Record reports last Tuesday's turnout was only 37.2 percent, a historic low (A-6). Two days ago, the Woodland Park daily said the turnout was 38 percent.

That means more than six out of every 10 voters were so apathetic -- so turned off by Christie's lies and The Record's obsession with politics over policy -- they didn't even bother to vote.

Satirist Bill Mahrer noted on his Friday night TV show Christie has caused "landslides."

Glaring typos

Notable typos in today's paper include an A-6 chart labeled "New York," not "New York City," for the mayoral contest won by Bill de Blasio.

Voter turnout in the city (24 percent) was even lower than in New Jersey, but don't expect The Record to explore the reasons for the apathy here or there.

Houlton error

Another bad typo appears on the Local front as Production Editor Liz Houlton, supervisor of the legally blind copy editors, laughs all the way to the bank with her six-figure salary.

Road Warrior John Cichowski assaults readers with a landslide of data today, but forgot to include the number of cellphone violations issued by police in Teaneck, second only to Paterson's 1,020 (L-1).

Road litter

If past columns are any guide, Cichowski is unable to accurately transcribe figures to his column from New Jersey's Administrative Office of the Courts, and many of his conclusions are flawed.

An even bigger problem is that cellphone, speeding and other violations for a 12-month period ended in May 2013 aren't compared to previous years.

So readers who believe enforcement has declined dramatically remain in the dark.

And where are the numbers for the state police, who patrol such raceways as the New Jersey Turnpike and Route 80, which passes just below the nondescript office building where The Record's editors hide out every day.

Ignoring the homeless

The outpouring of support and offers of money to the formerly homeless James Brady leaves hundreds of homeless people in Hackensack out in the cold (L-1).

Brady, as a Page 1 story stated on Saturday, has been denied government assistance because he was awarded an unclaimed $850 he found on the street and didn't report it, according to a city bureaucrat.

Half the story

On today's Business front, Your Money's Worth Columnist Kevin DeMarrais reports a reader who charges gasoline purchases and receives a 3 percent cash rebate or "what he pays extra for charging his purchase."

But there are still many gasoline stations that charge the same price for cash and credit purchases, including the new Wawa on Essex Street in Lodi and every station on the turnpike and Garden State Parkway.

Silence is golden

On the Opinion front today, former Record reporter Carl Golden claims Democratic challenger Barbara Buono "became bogged down in extraneous issues while largely ignoring Christie's vulnerabilities -- property tax control, job creation, economic growth."

But Buono's TV ads and other campaigning did emphasize the 400,000 out of work in the Garden State and the sad state of the economy under the no-tax Christie, among other economic issues, only to be ignored or see her message buried by The Record.

The Record has been running Golden column's for years, but as a press flunky for two former Republican governors, can anything he says be believed?

More Shoop smears

Also on O-1, Columnist Mike Kelly continues to smear the name of Richard Shoop, 20, the Teaneck man who committed suicide inside the Garden State Plaza in Paramus last Monday night or early Tuesday.

In Kelly's second column on Shoop -- who hurt no one but himself -- the burned-out reporter claims the Teaneck man's name "will unfortunately join a long list of young men" who killed many others at Columbine High School; a Newton, Conn., elementary school and other places I won't list.

Kelly could have been effective merely recounting his impressions of Shoop, who worked at Victor's Pizzeria, the Teaneck shop the reporter patronized.

Instead, he irresponsibly sensationalizes and exaggerates what happened at the Paramus mall and compares Shoop to mass killers.

Fat and food

There's no explanation why the proposed federal ban on trans fats hasn't been packaged with all of the Christie coverage (Editorial, O-2).

Readers familiar with Restaurant Reviewer Elisa Ung's obsessions with artery clogging meat and desserts will get a kick out of her reporting today on "a large selection of fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy products" at the Wawa in Lodi (BL-1 and BL-4).

In Travel today, a cover story about the island of Nevis from The Washington Post is accompanied by a list of hotels and restaurants with prices (T-4).

So, are readers to assume that when travel pieces by Editor Jill Schensul and other staffers are silent on prices that means they were comped by cruise lines, airlines and hotels in return for the publicity?

Coverage of Christie is true masturbatory journalism

Posted on 11:33 AM by Dilip walkar
A Manhattan scene at 9th Avenue and 59th Street.

By Victor E. Sasson
Editor

Can't you just see Washington Correspondent Herb Jackson touching himself as he composed the lead paragraph of his Page 1 story in The Record today on a purported "Christie frenzy"?

This is true masturbatory journalism, where the reporter pulls out all of his rhetorical flourishes, and the hell with the facts.

Is a Time magazine cover that lampoons Christie's weight, plus appearances on a bunch of TV shows, a "frenzy" (A-1)?

Politics ad nauseum

The Record is engaged in its own feeding frenzy on promoting Governor Christie as a presidential candidate in an election that is still three, long years away.

And as they have done since the GOP bully first took office in 2010, Jackson and other reporters, including Charles Stile and Melissa Hayes, conspire with Editor Marty Gottlieb basically to ignore Christie's mean-spirited polices and portray him as "popular," though they never say with whom.

I guess their reasoning is that if The Record constantly calls him "popular," the paper will be "popular," too.

No landslide

Today's front page also discards the fiction that Christie won a second term on Tuesday by a "landslide," as The Record reluctantly acknowledges a "historically low turnout" of 38 percent -- fewer than four out of 10 voters (A-1 and A-8).

The big, black "LANDSLIDE" headline on Wednesday's front page is another case where the pursuit of breaking news ignores reality in a desperate bid to sell newspapers.

Of course, The Record doesn't dare explore what turns off legions of New Jersey voters, fearing its own relentless focus on "politics" over issues may be one of the culprits.

In fact, I can't remember the last time I saw a story exploring voter apathy, which infects every local and state election in New Jersey.

Here's Alfie

On A-21 today, Editorial Page Editor Alfred P. Doblin tackles the subject in a column, calling people who don't vote "losers" and the turnout on Tuesday "pathetic."

He reports "slightly more than 2 million voters cast votes for governor" out of 5,511,048 registered voters in New Jersey.

But even Doblin doesn't know how easy it is to vote, mentioning only "absentee ballots" for people who have physical disabilities or work schedules that prevent them from voting "in person."

The clueless editor doesn't know voters can apply for mail-in ballots that are sent to their homes weeks before the election, and when they cast their ballots, they can mail them back to the Board of Elections.

Here's Kelly

Another candidate for masturbatory journalism today is Mike Kelly, whose Page 1 column invokes the mass shootings of Columbine and Newton in the same breath as the suicide of Richard Shoop, 20, of Teaneck inside Garden State Plaza.

Shoop, who killed himself Monday night or early Tuesday morning in the mall's basement, likely couldn't face another four years of Christie.

Kelly's desperation to get his drivel on Page 1 is evident from concocting such a stretch -- Shoop reportedly didn't intend to hurt anyone but himself  -- and typical of media hype and exaggeration.

As usual, I can't get past Kelly's dated column photo and the shit-eating grin that tells me the veteran reporter knows he can get away with writing any crap he wants since Gottlieb took over as editor.

Two more embarrassing corrections appear on A-2 today -- the misspelling of a high school athlete's name and an inaccurate headline about a council election.

Homeless brats

On the front of Local today, spoiled Paramus Catholic High School students stage their yearly charade of spending a night in a box.

The lead paragraph says the rules were clear -- no food, no cellphones, no going inside -- but not whether they were allowed to bring condoms (L-1).

On L-3, a photo of Paterson cops attending a "Blue Mass" to honor fallen officers doesn't mention whether a mass will be held for victims of gun violence after Christie slashed state aid and the Silk City was forced to lay off police.

Dissing the elderly

An L-6 story tells readers Deputy Assignment Flunky Dan Sforza is ignoring the struggles of seniors to fill their retirement years with meaningful activities.

James Parham, 75, of Englewood pleaded guilty after he was arrested for allegedly pimping "mostly young women with crack cocaine habits to some of his younger neighbors."

Thai-ing one on

In Better Living, Restaurant Reviewer Elisa Ung didn't stray far from the Woodland Park newsroom to appraise Imocha, a Thai restaurant in the township (BL-18).

Many Bergen County readers won't bother, wondering why Ung doesn't mention any of the great salads or the abundance of vegetables and fresh herbs that Wondee's in Hackensack and other great Thai restaurants are known for.

Second look

A third candidate for masturbatory journalism is Road Warrior John Cichowski, who is so full of himself he can't get anything right.

In his effort to write three columns a week, Cichowski will literally make it up as he goes along, and bend the facts to fit whatever theme he chooses.

In his Sunday column, he misstated the towing charges on the New Jersey Turnpike, as a concerned reader notes on the Facebook page for Road Warrior Bloopers:

More Road Warrior errors and exaggeration

In his Wednesday column on pedestrian death, Cichowski reported there were 402 such deaths from 2009-11, when the actual number was 441, as stated in the New Jersey State Police fatality reports he rewrites every year.

His column also claimed pedestrian deaths remain high and have not declined, as road deaths have.

But he ignores that "actual pedestrian deaths declined by 20 percent from the mid-1990s to 2011, and are on track this year to be the lowest total ever recorded in New Jersey by a wide margin," according to a concerned reader who fact-checks the Road Warrior column and maintains the bloopers page on Facebook.
